VISTOR’S GUIDE: WHAT TO EXPECT

Parking and Welcome

Parking is available onsite at 1015 E Montecito St, Santa Barbara, CA 93103. When you enter the temple building, a greeter will welcome you, present you with a program, and direct you to the “hondo” (Buddha hall).

Participation

Feel free to participate in any aspect of the service as you feel comfortable. Except for sutra chanting (done in classical Chinese or Japanese), the entire service is conducted in English. To learn more about the service order, check out our About Us page.

Namo Amida Butsu

You’ll hear us intone the Nembutsu, the words “Namo Amida Butsu,” during the service which translates to “I bow my head to the truth of enlightenment, wisdom and compassion.” The Nembutsu is central to our Buddhist practice. In this video, two ministers from our sister temple in Sacramento explain the spiritual meaning of Namo Amida Butsu.

Sutra Chanting

Chanting Buddhist scriptures is a way to calm the mind and learn about the Dharma. Instructions are provided. Examples of our Jodo Shinshu chants are available here

Bowing and Incense Burning

Like in other Buddhist temples, it is customary to offer a very brief bow upon entering the hondo as a sign of gratitude to the wisdom and compassion we receive through all life. There will also be opportunities to burn incense, also as a sign of gratitude.

Monetary Donations

Though we humbly receive any expression of “dana” (selfless giving), donations are neither required nor expected.
