April Service: Hanamatsuri (Flower Festival)

Hanamatsuri celebrates the birth of the Buddha. Legend says his mother, Queen Maya, gave birth in Lumbini’s Garden where all the flowers bloomed and sweet tea rained from the sky. A hanamido (花御堂, flower hall) was decorated and sweet tea poured over the statue of the baby Buddha.

Thanks to Junko Torigoe, Jodi Miles, and Miko Tollefson for arranging the flowers. Thanks to TJs for donating multiple days’ worth of flowers. Thanks to Christophe Sautot for setting up the Facebook stream. 25 people attended virtually.

The service opened with Rev JP ringing the bell and offering a Dharma message on how our ancestors bring us together as sangha. He demonstrated bathing the Buddha statue with ama-cha. Photos include Emiliano at the hanamido and group pictures of participants.

Dharma Message – Rev JP deGuzman

“Can I Get a Wakeup Call?”

A traveler asks for a wake-up call. The clerk responds not with a time but with a quote:

“My eyes being hindered by blind passions, I cannot perceive the light that grasps me; Yet the great compassion without tiring, Illumines me always.”

The traveler is struck—“Now that’s a wakeup call!” and thanks the clerk, named Shinran.

Though Shinran Shonin never worked at a hotel, his teachings awaken us. We often try to achieve everything alone, but we’re guided by light and life. Saying “Namo Amida Butsu” is not asking for favors but showing gratitude. This Gotan-e, let’s reflect on the wakeup call Shinran offered to all.
